Kerala or Keralam is a state of India, located south most on its west coast. It was created on1 November 1956 ,by the StatesReorganisationAct, combining various Malayalam speaking regions. The state has an area of 38,863 km2 (15,005 sq mi) and is bordered by Karnataka to the north and northeast, Tamil Nadu to the south and southeast and the Lakshadweep Sea towards the west. Thiruvananthapuram is the capital and the largest city, while its largest metropolitan area is Kochi.
The etymology of Kerala is disputed. The prevailing theory states that it is an imperfect portmanteau that fuses kera ('coconut palm tree') and alam ('land' or 'location'). Natives of Kerala — Keralites — thus refer to their land as Keralam. Other theories have the name originating from the phrase chera alam (Land of the Chera). Kerala's tourist industries among others also use the phrase God's own country.
